An Electronic Pen Pal Project

YOUR PROJECT
Over the next 6 months, you will be doing the following activities. While it may seem overwhelming - remember it is over 6 months of class work. You will be choosing an important person in US history from a list of choices. You will be making a poster of personality traits. You will be researching, using different sources, the accomplishments and traits of your VIP. You will research your VIP's life, accomplishments and traits. You will peer review your research. You will be creating a chart of your VIP's accomplishments and their personality traits. You will be creating a story board for your multimedia presentation. You will be creating a multimedia presentation about your VIP. You will peer edit and evaluate your multimedia presentation. You will be presenting your multimedia presentation and addressing questions in your oral presentation. You will be using an electronic journal to record your progress, frustrations, and successes as you move through this project. Not to worry, you will be
able to do this!!!Remember we will do 90% in class or computer lab. ACTIVITIES
1. INTRODUCTION You will be viewing a movie clip of a famous person (Ruby Bridges). You will brainstorm and skim with your fellow students using the social science text book, famous people in US history. Teacher will post the famous people choices on this web site, so you and your pen pal can choose one. VIP Choice Chart In computer lab, you will go to the project web site and read the introduction. You will email your partner about your choices and together you will decide. In computer lab, you will reflect your excitement or concerns about the upcoming project in their electronic journal. Electronic Journal Rubric 2. ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS ![]() What are the personality traits of famous people that made them influential in US history? You will brainstorm other questions that they might ask to answer this question. Leading question: What did they accomplish? You will develop another leading question? Focus question: What was Ruby Bridges or her parents doing in the movie and what personality traits are shown by that behavior? You will brainstorm and teacher lists on the board the behaviors & traits. Teacher shows a different Ruby Bridges movie clip and asks, "What behaviors or personality traits does she have that made her influential in US history." You will brainstorm what behaviors lead to those personality traits. You will make posters of personality traits and the behavior that demonstrates that trait. Rubric for Personality Poster 3. RESEARCH SKILLS ![]() You will be taught how to use think.com for the platform to share your project with your ePal. You will use a variety of resources to find the answer to the essential question. If you have forgotten the essential question, please reference our project inweb site Overview. You can use any of the following resources to find your information Internet Resources on the project web site for additional sites Reference resources, available in the library and classroom Books Newspapers Movies Teacher will teach mini-lessons on research skills. You will share findings with your email partner through your written electronic journal. Be sure to list all the information and WHERE YOU FOUND IT. Both you and your partner should be doing this. In the end, you will have a ton of information and all your resources you used. Teacher will share the final rubric (what is required) so you know what you will be graded on. Final Rubric for Multimedia Research Project 4. RESEARCH PEER REVIEW You will fill out a peer review worksheet, checking to see that you have all the information that you need. One partner will begin by filling it out and sending it to their pen pal. The responding pen pal will fill out another one and sends it with comments about the review received from their partner. Research continues until they meet all the requirements of the project. Reseach Checklist 5. CHART YOUR VIP'S PERSONALITY TRAITS You will make a chart of the behaviors or accomplishments of their VIP and list the corresponding personality trait. You will email this to your pen pal several times until it is complete. This chart maybe used in your final multimedia presentation. 6. YOUR MULTIMEDIA PRESENTATION You and your pen pal will produce one multimedia presentation. You will try to use as many different applications as possible in your final project. Video, still clips, words, graphs, charts, audio (music or narration), depending on what software is available. You will need to begin making the story board using your research. You need to include at least the following elements in your presentation: 1. Name and vital statistics of your VIP. 2. Historical background happening at the time in which your VIP lived. 3. What your VIP did that made him/her famous. 4. How did this affect history? 5. What personality traits made their accomplishment possible? 6. How would our lives be different if this person did not live? 7. What could have happened instead? 8. What personality traits of this leader do you have? 9. Credits/bibliography You can choose to use any multimedia software that is currently available at school for the final production. These may include:
Your teacher will conference with you, when your story board is complete. See Overview for due dates. ORAL PRESENTATION ![]() You will show your multimedia presentation and address the following questions orally. What was the biggest challenge in this project? What worked well and what did not work well between you and your partner? What software did you use and would you choose them again? Or would you use a different software next time? What leadership qualities or traits do you have and how have they been helpful to you so far in life? Extra credit is available for those who decide to dress as their VIP for this presentation. Be sure to address all of these questions for the best grade. See rubric below.
